These are my conversations as of late with my eldest:
(Driving home today from a play date)
Makenna: I help you with the groceries Mama?
Me: We don't have any groceries today.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because we didn't go to the store.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because we went to the store yesterday.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because we went to go play instead.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because we have friends we like to play with.
Makenna: (I'll let you guess what came next.)
(In the car, driving past an over-turned car)
Makenna: What's wrong Mama?
Me: That car flipped over.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because he wasn't paying attention and crashed.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because maybe he was driving too fast.
Makenna: Why?
Me: Because his 3-year-old was in the back seat asking him 'Why' every 2 seconds and he needed to get out of his flippin' car.
Makenna: Why?
I was warned of this stage. I knew it was on its way. I was actually surprised it hadn't started until now. Please tell me it's over in a week. Please?
When is it okay to just stop answering the devilish question? Give me an out here, people. Quick.

When she asks you "why?" respond with "why not?" Turn it back on her!
An answer we gave Adam many times was "because Heavenly Father made .... this way...."
Carter does this the second we pull out of the driveway...only in the car and it drives me crazy. I turn it back on him though and it totally works. Just ask her the why question back such as 'why do you think the car flipped over'. It totally works and gets their imagination going and they forget to keep asking why. It works wonders, but sadly it hasn't ended in a week for us, I think we are going on about 6 months now. But at least he stops asking why a hundred times. Good luck!!!!!! I feel your pain.
I tell Noah if he doesn't stop asking why to everything I say he'll go to time out. Now, he ask why and then answers himself. The answer is usually, "Because it is."
Oh yes, the "Why?" phase. We get stuff like..."What's that?" "It's a Burger King." "Why?" Seriously, how do you explain why a building is a Burger King?
Sometimes I really answer the why questions: "Well, the company 'Burger King' decided this corner would be a good place to put their restaurant, and feed a lot of hungry customers." Of course this is followed by more "why?"
Sometimes I just say "I don't know," or "It's hard to explain," or "why do you think?" I like that other kid's answer - "because it is."
Good thing she's so cute, right? Good luck!
