A week ago today our little girl took a pretty serious spill on the kitchen tile. It truly was one of the saddest, scariest things I've dealt with EVA.
We were getting ready to go to Costco... DAY BEFORE COMPANY SHOWS UP... and I had my back turned, filling up emergency snacks for Makenna for the store. All of sudden, I hear a "SMACK" and turn around to find my little 19-month old on the floor w/ her face smashed against the tile. Her arm was under her chest. My best guess is that in about 90 seconds, she climbed up the kitchen chair, got up on her knees and took a nose dive for the tile. Crying insanely for what seemed like an eternity, with no amount of consoling doing any good, I lay down on the couch and stroked her hair. She finally falls asleep, after which I notice, to my complete horror, her left elbow is the size of a baseball.
My trusty Mother's Intuition kicks into full gear and I make the call of a broken arm. We need help- STAT. Drew guides us to the nearest hospital (note to all people who've recently moved: figure out the directions to the closest hospital BEFORE you need them). I run into the ER and to my surprise we are the ONLY people waiting. Further to my surprise, we are led to a "Pediatric Emergency Room," read: NO Grown-Up Patients Allowed. From there, within a matter of 30 minutes 2 pediatricians, 3 nurses, and 2 orthopaedic surgeons have come to assist us. What? Where's the hustle and bustle from ER? The doctors in green scrubs running everywhere frantically? The fat man who mans the triage desk? Where are the patients clawing at the glass sliding doors to get in? I was completely and utterly taken aback by my first Emergency Room Experience.
3 X-Rays,
9 hours in the ER bed with no food/drink,
1 45-minute surgery,
2 surgical pins in the elbow,
5 doses of morphine,
and 1 very long night in recovery...
we're all home and Makenna's healing. She has been such a trooper learning how to maneuver with her new splint that weighs as much as her. We get a lot of sympathy from strangers and equally as many glares from disapproving parents aimed toward her "negligent mother." On the bright side, it's been a life experience for all of us... and good subject matter for a couple of scrapbook pages! My one-armed baby pushing around her baby doll in the stroller:

I can not believe this! Poor girl! How scary.
OH..my..heavens! How scary & terrible! I don't know if I feel worse for you or Makenna! How long does she have to wear the brace/splint? She seems to be doing great. Good luck!
Holy Cow! That just broke my heart for both of you. I swear they are so incredibly quick you aren't watching for just a short minute and man they can do a lot in that time. The video is so sweet and I feel for her though as she doesn't even try to use that arm. She is doing good though.
How scary! Kids are just so quick aren't they. I am happy that you had a good experience in the ER! Hope she heals quickly! Stacy
Poor Makenna (and parents too). I am glad she is ok and healing :0)
I can't imagine how terrifying that must have been. Sounds like you (and she) handled it like champs. Get well soon Makenna!
OMGosh!!! I'm so sorry!! That is horrible! I'm sure you were terrified!
I wish I was closer so I could bring you dinner and do your dishes and fill you full of treats!
Kiss the little birdie for me!
How traumatic. You handled it much better that I, Kara. I probably would have been lost somewhere between panic and despair.
Mental note: call Drew for directions/help.
Poor Makenna! I feel so bad for her and am impressed by how well she's managing with her splint! What an ordeal, must have been so scary. Hope you guys are doing okay!
Oh my crazy! WOW. Poor (but irresistibly adorable) Makenna. She is a trooper and you guys are such great parents (don't believe those accusatory glares from the fat ladies at WalMart. Just tell them to go eat another donut).
I'm glad you're on the road to recovery and I hope you had a blast with your family.
Can't wait to see you!
P.S. This will make you (and maybe Makenna) feel better: http://men.style.com/gq/features/slideshow/v/031609RPAT.
Poor little girl, and poor mom! I know all too well what can happen when you turn around for a minute. But what can you do? You just can't watch them every second of every day. Impossible. Anyone who gives you disapproving looks obviously doesn't have children. I'm glad that she's on the way to recovery. We're still waiting for our first broken bone but I'm sure it's coming.
That is just so sad!! For both of you! I did not expect the surgery with pins! Poor little cutie. Hope you're both recovering =). She looks like she's doing great though. It's amazing, and wonderful, how kids bounce back! Also, what a great (first) experience at the ER!! You are so lucky!
how scary! poor thing!! poor mama, too!
Oh sweet girl! I have envisioned that same horror with Lucy so many times... I am so sorry! I hope she and you guys are doing well! Still no baby yet, but any day or minute now!
